Job Description

The role

You’ll sit close to the COO and leadership team and work across lawyers and business services. Your job is to turn our database structures into a reliable metrics layer and decision-ready reporting in Metabase.

You will:

  • Review and document database structures and data lineage.
  • Define metric definitions (single source of truth) and build a metric catalogue.
  • Write, test, and maintain SQL reporting models/queries used in Metabase dashboards.
  • Deliver dashboards that are operational (point-of-need), not cosmetic.
  • Provide analysis and insight that changes decisions: profitability, lock-up, WIP, matter cycle time, team performance, client experience signals.

Key responsibilities

1) Requirements and definitions

  • Lead stakeholder sessions to define reporting outcomes, metric logic, filters, and drill paths.
  • Produce crisp functional specs: inputs, transformations, outputs, acceptance criteria.

2) Data profiling, mapping, and transformations

  • Profile datasets to identify gaps, inconsistent values, and data quality issues.
  • Map fields across tables/systems where required (including migration-style work if relevant).
  • Build or support transformation logic (SQL-first; Python where justified).

3) Reporting build and deployment

  • Design, build, and deploy Metabase dashboards aligned to leadership and team workflows.
  • Create reusable SQL patterns and standard templates (filters, cohorts, time windows, segmenting).
  • Optimise query performance and reduce dashboard latency.

4) Testing and governance

  • Own QA: reconciliation checks, edge cases, and regression testing when upstream tables change.
  • Maintain documentation so the firm can support and extend reporting independently.
  • Implement lightweight governance: versioning, review cadence, deprecation process.

5) Insight and decision support

  • Deliver short, decision-oriented insights from the dashboards (variance drivers, anomalies, trends, root causes).
  • Build recurring reporting packs for monthly/quarterly review cycles.

About you

  • Strong SQL capability (comfort working directly with relational schemas, joins, window functions, performance tuning).
  • Proven experience translating messy stakeholder requests into precise metric definitions and dashboards.
  • Comfortable running workshops and holding the line on definitions, scope, and data quality.
  • Outcomes-driven: you measure success by decisions improved, not dashboards shipped.
  • Writes clear documentation and leaves a maintainable trail.

Knowledge and experience (preferred)

  • Metabase (or similar BI tool) experience.
  • Python for analysis/testing or light transformation work.
  • Experience in professional services or other time-and-matter environments (or demonstrable ability to learn quickly).
  • Familiarity with cloud data environments (Azure/AWS/GCP) and modern analytics practices (dbt-style modelling, semantic layers) is advantageous.
