About the role
A Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for leading systems engineering activities across the full system lifecycle for complex Defence capability projects. The role ensures technical solutions are coherent, verifiable, compliant, and aligned to customer and operational requirements. This is achieved through participation in all phases of the systems engineering lifecycle including requirements management, architecture development, design, implementation, integration, verification & validation, risk and change management.
What the role will involve
The responsibilities of your role will include the following:
- Lead requirements analysis, decomposition, allocation, traceability, verification planning, and compliance management
- Establish andĀ maintainĀ theĀ systemĀ technical baseline, including requirements, architecture, interfaces, design decisions, assumptions, risks, and verification evidence
- Develop, review, andĀ maintainĀ key systems engineering artefacts, including specifications, architecture & descriptions, interface control documents,Ā verificationĀ artefacts, trade studies, technical reports, and systems engineering plans
- Lead system architecture and interface management activities to ensure the solution is technically coherent,Ā feasible, secure, supportable, and aligned with operational needs
- Support engineering decisions through structured trade studies, technical analysis,Ā optionĀ assessment, and evidence-based recommendations
- Contribute to systems engineering estimates, schedules, scope definition, resource planning, and technical delivery planning
- Develop andĀ maintainĀ verification and validation strategies, plans, procedures, matrices, and evidence toĀ demonstrateĀ compliance with applicable requirements
- Support integration, test readiness, verification execution, defect resolution, and customer acceptance activities
- Plan, prepare, and support internal and customer technical reviews, including requirements, design, test readiness, production readiness, verification, and acceptance reviews
- Manage technical risks, issues, assumptions, dependencies, opportunities, and engineering change impacts
- Support configuration management and engineering change control to ensure the approved technical baseline isĀ maintained
- Coordinate with specialty engineering disciplines, including safety, security,Ā cyberworthiness, ILS, reliability, maintainability, human factors, EMI/EMC, and environmentalĀ qualification
- SupportĀ DefenceĀ technical assurance, certification, compliance, and acceptance activities, including preparation of objective quality evidence.
- Participate in internal engineering and quality processes, including non-conformance reports, failure reports, corrective actions, investigations, lessons learned, and continuous improvement activities.
- Provide technical leadership, task guidance, peer review, and mentoring to junior engineers and other engineering team members.
- Support adherence to company Quality processes and procedures, including thoseĀ requiredĀ for AS9100 accreditation
What youāll bring
The role requires the following experience and skills:
- Degree in electronic/electrical engineering or similar discipline.
- 6+ years of experience in a System Engineering role.
- Experience with Defence acquisition or sustainment programs.
- Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles across the system lifecycle.
- Understanding of engineering change control, configuration management, technical risk management, and technical decision-making processes.
- Eligible for registration with the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland (RPEQ).
- Ability to work independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to engineering, management, supplier, and customer stakeholders.
Desirable
- Post-graduate qualifications in Systems Engineering.
- Knowledge of model-based systems engineering (MBSE).
- Knowledge of systems architecture frameworks such asĀ DoDAFĀ and standards such as MOSA/SOSA.
- Experience withĀ DefenceĀ communications systems, electronic warfare systems, RF systems, mission systems, command and control systems, platform integration, or other complexĀ DefenceĀ capabilities.
- Experience preparing objective quality evidence for verification, validation, certification, compliance, or customer acceptance.
