Job Description
We’re looking for a VFX Artist who can do more than just simulate explosions and particle effects. You’ll be responsible for designing, building, and implementing stylized and photoreal visual effects that amplify gameplay or cinematic storytelling. You should be as comfortable building procedural systems in Houdini as you are optimizing GPU-intensive effects for real-time performance in Unreal Engine or Unity.
This role requires a deep understanding of visual language, timing, and the physical properties of elements (fire, smoke, energy, destruction, etc.)—with the technical prowess to execute them within tight production pipelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Conceptualize and create original VFX for characters, environments, abilities, and scripted events that enhance mood, tension, and player response.
- Author complex shaders and real-time materials to simulate phenomena such as refraction, subsurface scattering, and volumetrics.
- Build FX rigs that are reusable, modular, and consistent with the art direction of the project.
- Collaborate closely with Tech Art, Animation, and Design to ensure seamless integration of FX into scenes and gameplay.
- Debug and optimize FX assets to meet memory and performance benchmarks on multiple platforms, including high-end PC and consoles.
- Maintain and expand internal libraries of VFX assets, blueprints, and materials.
- Push technical boundaries by researching and integrating the latest real-time VFX workflows (e.g., Niagara, VFX Graph, fluid simulation caching).
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in a professional VFX role within games, animation, or film production.
- Advanced proficiency with at least one of the following real-time engines: Unreal Engine (Niagara, Material Editor) or Unity (VFX Graph, Shader Graph).
- Proficient in Houdini for procedural VFX creation, including tool building and simulation export.
- Strong understanding of physical and stylized VFX principles, including timing, scale, motion, and behavior.
- Experience with scripting or node-based logic to control FX behavior and event triggers (Blueprints, C#, or Python).
- Ability to create seamless sprite sheets, flipbooks, and hand-painted FX textures.
- Familiar with version control systems (Perforce, Git) and collaborative production environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience optimizing VFX for VR, AR, or mobile platforms.
- Knowledge of lighting, post-processing, and cinematic tools within game engines.
- Prior experience working in tightly scheduled Agile pipelines.
- Film or animation background with an emphasis on simulation and compositing.
- Shader programming knowledge in HLSL/GLSL.
