Technical Lead – Backend Engineering

Job Description

Role Overview

We are looking for a hands-on Technical Lead to guide the design, development, and delivery of backend systems within our Engineering organization. This role combines strong individual technical contribution with leadership of a small team – owning architecture decisions, driving engineering best practices, and mentoring engineers, while working closely with product, QA, and other engineering functions to ship reliable, scalable systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and architecture of backend services and APIs, ensuring scalability, security, and maintainability.
• Own technical delivery for your team – breaking down requirements, estimating effort, and driving execution to deadlines.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code and set the technical bar through hands-on contribution and code reviews.
• Mentor and grow a team of software engineers; support their technical development and career growth.
• Collaborate with Product Management to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Drive engineering best practices – coding standards, CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and documentation.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, and lead root-cause analysis for critical incidents.
• Evaluate and introduce new tools, frameworks, and technologies where they add clear value.
• Partner with cross-functional teams (DevOps, Data, Risk, Compliance) to deliver integrated solutions.
  

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 5 – 8 years of professional experience in backend software engineering, with demonstrated technical leadership.
• Strong programming skills in at least one backend language such as Java, Node.js, or Python.
• Solid experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices-based architectures.
• Good understanding of relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL/PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis) and data modeling.
• Working knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Experience with system design for high-availability, high-throughput applications.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and automated testing practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound architectural trade-offs.
• Prior experience mentoring engineers or leading a small team, formally or informally.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work closely with product and cross-functional stakeholders.
  

Good To Have

• Experience working on a lending, credit, or broader fintech/BFSI platform is a strong plus.
• Exposure to loan origination, underwriting, or credit risk systems.
• Familiarity with payment gateway integrations, KYC/AML workflows, or regulatory/compliance requirements in financial services.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar).
