Job Description

We’re looking for a System Administrator who thrives in environments where uptime is non-negotiable and undocumented edge cases are part of the job. If you’ve ever restored a production VM at 2 a.m. from an incomplete backup—and then automated the fix before 9—you might be a fit here.

You’ll manage and harden a mixed fleet of on-prem Linux and Windows servers supporting custom-built internal tools, legacy systems no one wants to touch (but that run key operations), and new containers we’re slowly migrating to Kubernetes. You won’t be siloed—expect to work with developers, DBAs, and occasionally end users who still think Outlook rules are your job.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Managing and monitoring 40+ VMs and 15+ physical servers (Red Hat, CentOS, and a few stubborn Windows 2012 boxes that still serve critical functions)
  • Running and maintaining our Nagios and Zabbix-based monitoring stack (and knowing how to make the alerts useful)
  • Responding to tickets escalated from L1 that involve actual troubleshooting, not password resets
  • Maintaining our Ansible playbooks and writing new ones to replace outdated Bash scripts still living in cron
  • Owning patching cycles, kernel upgrades, and rolling reboots with full rollback plans (we don’t have time for downtime surprises)
  • Working with the network team to troubleshoot VLAN tag issues and firewall rules—no ticket ping-pong here
  • Keeping our backup jobs verifiable, and testing recovery plans quarterly—no theoretical restores
  • Participating in off-hours on-call rotation (roughly once every 5 weeks) and responding effectively without being micromanaged

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in a mid-size production environment (not just classroom or help desk)
  • Proficiency with Linux server environments (preferably RHEL or derivatives), plus decent experience with Windows Server administration
  • Strong scripting ability in Bash and Python—you’ve written things more advanced than #!/bin/bash + echo
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Ansible preferred, but Terraform and SaltStack okay)
  • Experience with virtualization (VMware vSphere is a plus)
  • Understanding of DNS, DHCP, LDAP/AD, and troubleshooting Layer 2/3 issues
  • Comfortable working in environments where not everything is documented—and documenting as you go

Nice to Have

  • Experience with hybrid environments—especially transitioning from bare metal/VMs to Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with audit and compliance controls (HIPAA, SOC 2, etc.)
  • Experience with distributed logging stacks (ELK, Loki, etc.)
  • Knowledge of container security best practices
  • You’ve ever debugged a boot failure from a failed kernel upgrade—and fixed it manually via recovery shell
