Role Details

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer – Primary Electrical to lead and support the delivery of HV primary design across substation and renewable infrastructure projects. This role will play a key part in concept development, detailed design, and project execution from feasibility through to commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver concept and detailed primary electrical designs, including layouts, studies, and technical documentation
  • Lead and participate in design reviews (single line diagrams, substation layouts, elevations, etc.)
  • Support cross-discipline design coordination, including HAZID, HAZOP, and safety-in-design reviews
  • Respond to RFIs and provide technical support to project teams
  • Contribute to tender submissions, feasibility studies, and technical investigations
  • Attend and support FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders to deliver optimised engineering solutions
  • Develop and review technical specifications and standards
  • Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to ensure timely delivery of equipment
  • Support site activities including inspections, construction, and commissioning phases
  • Drive continuous improvement in design processes and engineering standards

Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years’ experience in HV transmission, substations, or renewable infrastructure (Australian experience essential)
  • Strong knowledge of AS 2067 and relevant Australian standards
  • Background working with a Network Service Provider (NSP) or contractor environment
  • Proven experience in primary design, including:
    • Substation layout and clearances
    • Earthing, lighting, EMF and corona studies
    • Cable sizing and routing
    • Short-circuit force calculations
  • Familiarity with HV equipment such as:
    • Power transformers
    • Disconnectors
    • Surge arresters
  • Understanding of primary system studies and analysis
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
  • Experience in testing and commissioning (highly regarded)
  • Knowledge of regulatory approvals and grid compliance requirements
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex projects end-to-end
