Senior PHP Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on core PHP development within complex, non-framework-dependent environments, where engineers are expected to design, build, and evolve scalable systems powering high-traffic digital products.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain large-scale PHP-based applications and services within enterprise environments
• Work within and evolve custom or minimally-opinionated PHP architectures (not framework-driven systems)
• Develop and support large standalone PHP applications/services not based on frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony, or CMS platforms such as Drupal or WordPress
• Translate business requirements into robust technical solutions in collaboration with Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams, while writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following strong engineering principles
• Participate in architectural discussions, technical design decisions, code reviews, and contribute to engineering best practices
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production issues, support Agile delivery improvements, and contribute to system scalability, performance, and reliability enhancements.

Skills and Experience

• 5+ years of professional PHP development experience, with strong experience building and maintaining large-scale PHP applications in non-framework-heavy environments
• Comfortable working with standalone PHP systems not reliant on frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony, or CMS platforms such as WordPress or Drupal.
• Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), software design patterns, and system/application architecture principles
• Experience with relational databases (MySQL or PostgreSQL), plus writing unit tests and working with automated testing practices
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in collaborative engineering teams, with exposure to distributed teams being advantageous
• Desirable not Mandatory: Front-end experience (particularly React), CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or OCI), observability tools (logging, metrics, monitoring), and Docker/containerisation experience
