Job Description

We’re seeking a Responsive Web Design Specialist who thrives at the intersection of front-end engineering and user experience. This role isn’t just about scaling a layout—it’s about crafting adaptive, performant designs that feel right on every screen. You’ll work closely with UX designers, developers, and product owners to ensure our responsive implementations go beyond breakpoints and deliver consistency without compromise. This isn’t a job for someone who simply toggles flexbox values—you’ll need to understand accessibility, performance budgets, component design systems, and how micro-interactions can shift user behavior on different devices.

We operate on a design system built in Figma and implemented in React (with TailwindCSS). You’ll help evolve that system to ensure responsiveness is not an afterthought but a built-in principle.

Responsibilities

  • Translate high-fidelity mockups into scalable responsive layouts with attention to detail and nuance.
  • Audit and improve existing components for responsiveness across mobile, tablet, and widescreen interfaces.
  • Partner with UX and engineering to prototype responsive behaviors for complex, data-heavy interfaces.
  • Establish rules, patterns, and guardrails for layout scaling, fluid typography, and responsive spacing.
  • Identify and eliminate anti-patterns in our current responsive implementation.
  • Document responsive behavior of components and templates clearly for cross-functional teams.
  • Optimize interfaces for performance, readability, and accessibility on all screen sizes.
  • Participate in user testing to assess layout efficacy across devices and inform iterative improvements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3–5 years of professional experience focused specifically on responsive design for production web apps (not just marketing sites).
  • Expert knowledge of HTML5, CSS (including modern layout models like Grid and Flexbox), and responsive media queries.
  • Strong working knowledge of design systems and their responsive constraints (preferably using Figma).
  • Experience with component-based frameworks (React preferred), and how responsiveness integrates into reusable UI elements.
  • Proven ability to balance visual fidelity, performance, and accessibility in responsive solutions.
  • Understanding of progressive enhancement, content hierarchy, and mobile-first design philosophy.
  • Portfolio that includes before-and-after examples or challenges solved in responsive design work (real product work only—no templates).

Preferred:

  • Experience working with utility-first CSS frameworks (like Tailwind) and customizing them for responsive behaviors.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+) and how they apply across devices.
  • Knowledge of JavaScript frameworks used for interaction handling in responsive contexts (e.g., responsive tables, accordions, nav menus).
  • Ability to articulate the trade-offs between breakpoints, fluid layouts, and adaptive content strategies in team discussions.
