Job Description
We’re looking for a Responsive Web Design Specialist with a deep understanding of adaptive interfaces, layout performance across devices, and progressive enhancement principles. This is not a “pixel-perfect” role—this is about systematic, scalable responsiveness: anticipating edge cases, understanding device/network constraints, and architecting front-end solutions that prioritize accessibility, maintainability, and user context.
You’ll work closely with UX designers, front-end engineers, and content strategists to convert Figma concepts into living, breathing components. You won’t just be implementing breakpoints—you’ll be designing layout systems that adapt meaningfully across screen types, input modes, and environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement responsive layout systems using modern CSS architecture (Grid, Flexbox, container queries, logical properties).
- Collaborate with design systems and front-end teams to build reusable, device-agnostic components.
- Translate Figma constraints and autolayout structures into scalable, performant front-end code.
- Work with engineers to audit and refactor legacy layouts to meet responsive and accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2 AA+).
- Own the cross-device QA process, establishing responsive test matrices and maintaining a living breakpoint documentation strategy.
- Advocate for performance-aware design: consider load time, layout shifts, and visual stability across low-end and high-end devices.
- Use tools like BrowserStack, Polypane, or Responsive Viewer to diagnose and resolve rendering issues across devices and viewports.
- Mentor designers and developers on the principles of intrinsic responsiveness and mobile-first architecture.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience specializing in responsive web design across product-focused or content-rich platforms.
- Strong knowledge of CSS architecture, including utility-first methodologies (e.g., Tailwind), BEM, or scalable component systems.
- Proficient with design tokens, layout APIs, and CSS variables to support responsiveness in design systems.
- Deep understanding of HTML semantics, accessibility principles (ARIA, keyboard navigation), and how they relate to responsive behavior.
- Demonstrated ability to implement fluid grids, viewport-relative typography, and clamp()-based scaling.
- Solid experience debugging layout issues across multiple screen types (phones, tablets, desktops, TVs).
- Familiarity with performance metrics like Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) and how to optimize for them.
- Comfortable working in frameworks like React, Vue, or Svelte, even if only focusing on the presentation layer.
- Experience using and contributing to component libraries (e.g., Storybook or design system documentation platforms).
- Strong communication skills with a proactive approach to documentation and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with container queries and subgrid, with an eye on upcoming CSS specs.
- Exposure to internationalization (i18n) and how responsive layouts accommodate RTL and variable content length.
- Previous contributions to an open-source design system or web standards initiative.
