Job Description
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Print Design Specialist with a deep understanding of production processes, layout optimization, and brand consistency across printed media. This role requires someone who can move seamlessly from concept to press, ensuring every piece produced meets exacting technical and aesthetic standards. You will work closely with marketing, product, and operations teams to produce packaging, signage, catalogs, and other tactile brand experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and prepare production-ready files for a wide range of printed materials, including but not limited to retail packaging, large-format signage, lookbooks, inserts, and environmental graphics.
- Collaborate with vendors and print partners to ensure color accuracy, material compatibility, and adherence to technical specs (bleeds, dielines, varnish zones, PMS matching).
- Create mechanicals based on creative direction, adapting master designs to multiple SKUs or size variants while preserving visual hierarchy and fidelity.
- Maintain and update a library of dielines, templates, and print production guides.
- Proof, revise, and troubleshoot print files—both internally and with external vendors—prior to press.
- Stay informed on print production technologies, specialty finishes (foil stamping, spot UV, embossing), substrates, and sustainable materials to advise on creative possibilities.
- Act as the final gatekeeper for prepress accuracy, ensuring files are prepared according to printer specifications and production timelines.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of professional experience in print design, specifically with hands-on experience producing packaging, retail displays, and/or complex multi-page print pieces.
- Expert proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop—especially in setting up dielines, using GREP styles, and managing linked assets and color profiles.
- Strong knowledge of prepress standards, including trapping, overprinting, CMYK vs. spot color builds, and resolution requirements for various output formats.
- Demonstrated experience working with offset, digital, flexographic, and large-format print processes.
- Ability to interpret and apply printer-provided specs and guidelines with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with color management systems and practical experience using Pantone swatches and managing ICC profiles.
- Experience working with print production software/tools such as Esko, ArtPro+, or Kodak Prinergy (a plus).
- Highly detail-oriented, with the ability to identify potential production issues and proactively resolve them before output.
- Excellent time management skills, capable of juggling multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience presenting work and justifying technical or aesthetic choices to both creative and non-creative stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in sustainability-focused packaging design or working with eco-conscious materials.
- Familiarity with 3D mockup tools for packaging (e.g., Adobe Dimension or Esko Studio).
- Working knowledge of print procurement or print buying is a bonus.
