Job Description
About the Role
We’re looking for a Packaging Designer who obsesses over dielines, structural problem-solving, and making unboxing a brand experience—not just a task. This is not a role for someone who wants to slap a logo on a box. You will collaborate with product development, sustainability, and supply chain teams to develop innovative packaging solutions that are as thoughtful as they are functional.
Key Responsibilities
- Design primary and secondary packaging across multiple product lines, from concept to production-ready files, with a strong focus on materials, form factor, and consumer interaction.
- Own the structural design process—work closely with manufacturers and packaging engineers to develop dielines, folds, and closures that reduce waste and optimize shelf presence.
- Develop mockups and prototypes for stakeholder presentations, internal reviews, and consumer testing.
- Collaborate with the sustainability team to identify eco-conscious alternatives to existing packaging formats, and actively design toward reduced carbon footprint targets.
- Build visual systems across packaging lines that are extensible but not templated—each design should carry brand cohesion while still feeling tailored to the product it holds.
- Art-direct packaging photography and instructional inserts as needed to support post-purchase clarity and customer delight.
- Partner with QA and logistics to validate how packaging holds up in transit, storage, and end-use scenarios.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of experience specifically in packaging design (CPG, beauty, tech, or specialty food preferred).
- Expert in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop; familiarity with Esko, ArtiosCAD, or similar packaging prototyping tools a plus.
- Demonstrated experience creating dielines and working with printers/manufacturers in a production environment (you’ve had press checks, and you’ve asked about flute direction).
- Portfolio that includes complex packaging executions—not just surface graphics. We want to see how you solved spatial, tactile, and sustainability challenges.
- Deep understanding of materials (rigid boxes, flexible pouches, foils, molded pulp, compostables) and how they behave across different formats and climates.
- Ability to balance cost, functionality, and aesthetic appeal without compromising on brand values or user experience.
- Strong project management skills; able to handle multiple timelines and pivot between quick-turn and longer R&D packaging projects.
Nice to Have
- Experience with sustainable material sourcing or LCA (life cycle assessment) data.
- Familiarity with accessibility considerations in packaging (e.g., senior-friendly closures, tactile markers).
- Hands-on experience creating packaging for e-commerce and retail environments with different durability and space requirements.
