Job Description

We’re seeking a Game Designer with a strong systems-thinking mindset and an obsessive attention to player experience. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in cross-disciplinary environments and wants to shape not just gameplay mechanics, but the entire feedback loop that makes a game rewarding. You’ll be joining a mid-sized team working on a narrative-rich, mechanics-heavy title that merges emergent systems with authored content. If you’ve ever diagrammed an economy for fun or written 3 different prototypes to find the “feel” of a jump arc, we’d like to meet you.

Responsibilities

  • Design Core Systems: Develop and iterate on gameplay mechanics, progression systems, and in-game economies that reward experimentation and replayability.
  • Own Feature Development: From concept pitch to tuning spreadsheets, you’ll be responsible for shepherding mechanics from idea to implementation in collaboration with engineers and artists.
  • Balance, Tweak, Repeat: Constantly refine pacing, difficulty curves, and player incentives using telemetry, qualitative feedback, and hands-on playtesting.
  • Write Design Specs That People Want to Read: Communicate your design intent clearly through specs, diagrams, and prototyping tools (we don’t want 50-page docs—unless they’re necessary).
  • Work With Narrative, Not Against It: Ensure that systems and storylines are tightly interwoven—if it breaks immersion, it breaks the design.
  • Play Your Own Work. A Lot. Be your harshest critic and your most excited fan.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in professional game design with at least one shipped title in a system-heavy or mechanics-driven role.
  • Strong systems design skills (e.g., progression, combat, crafting, simulation, or AI behavior loops)—you think in cause and effect.
  • Hands-on prototyping ability in Unity, Unreal, or proprietary engines—whiteboxing, blueprinting, or light scripting is expected.
  • Experience balancing in-game economies, tuning difficulty, and iterating based on player metrics or feedback.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to write concise, engaging documentation and collaborate across departments.
  • Strong player empathy and an instinct for what makes interactions satisfying or frustrating.
  • Bonus if you have:
    • Experience with moddable games or live tuning in a live service environment
    • Background in systems modeling, behavioral economics, or puzzle design
    • Portfolio samples, prototypes, or design breakdowns to share
