Job Description

This role complements a team primarily focused on front-end development and WordPress theming by adding advanced back-end expertise, systems thinking, and problem-solving capability. You’ll be the person the team turns to when something is complex, unclear, or broken.

What You’ll Build

  • Custom web applications — client portals, admin dashboards, data-driven tools
  • API integrations connecting third-party services to websites and applications
  • Custom WordPress plugins that extend functionality beyond off-the-shelf solutions
  • Complex Laravel applications with database architecture, authentication, and business logic
  • SQL queries and database structures that are optimized, maintainable, and well-documented
  • Staging and production deployment pipelines

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and build back-end solutions for client projects — from scoping through deployment
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex issues in existing codebases (WordPress and Laravel)
  • Extend and modify existing plugins, themes, and application frameworks
  • Collaborate with front-end developers, project managers, and designers to define technical requirements and timelines
  • Mentor junior developers on back-end patterns, integration strategies, and problem-solving approaches
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects with a focus on back-end complexity
  • Write and maintain technical documentation
  • Experience building polished, responsive marketing websites in WordPress

Position Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional web development experience with demonstrated expertise in Laravel and WordPress
  • Strong PHP proficiency — you write clean, well-structured back-end code, not just functional code
  • Proven experience building API integrations (RESTful services, third-party APIs, webhooks)
  • Strong SQL and database management skills (MySQL) — you can design schemas, write complex queries, and optimize performance
  • Experience building custom WordPress plugins (not just theme customization)
  • Proficient with Git, including branching strategies for team-based production workflows
  • Comfortable on the front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) — you can build and modify UI components, even if it’s not your primary focus
  • Familiarity with JavaScript libraries (Vue, jQuery, or similar)
  • Experience with server management, deployment processes, and environment configuration
  • Strong problem-solving skills — you can take an ambiguous requirement and turn it into a working technical approach
  • Excellent communication skills — you can explain what you’re building and why to non-technical teammates
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or equivalent self-taught/bootcamp experience
  • Preferred
    • Experience building client-facing portals or dashboards
    • Familiarity with headless CMS architectures or decoupled front-ends
    • Experience with caching strategies, queue systems, or background job processing in Laravel
    • Comfort with DevOps basics (CI/CD, Docker, server provisioning)
