Job Description
Job Summary
We’re looking for a Digital Illustrator who thrives on translating complex narratives into compelling visual storytelling. This role isn’t for template users or stock asset compilers. You’ll be creating original illustrations for editorial, web, and product interfaces, often from scratch, in collaboration with our writers, UX designers, and motion team. If you’re fluent in visual metaphor, have a sharp eye for composition, and know how to establish and maintain a consistent visual language across a variety of formats, you’ll feel at home here.
Core Responsibilities
- Create bespoke vector and raster illustrations that interpret abstract concepts such as data ethics, urban mobility, machine learning, or social policy into visually digestible forms.
- Develop visual systems and iconography that extend beyond a single campaign and scale across platforms.
- Collaborate with writers, UX designers, and animators to create sequences or frames that can transition seamlessly into motion graphics.
- Participate in and sometimes lead visual ideation sessions; you’re expected to contribute ideas, not just execute them.
- Maintain detailed file organization, naming conventions, and documentation for reusability and cross-team alignment.
- Respond constructively to critique, balancing vision with constraints like accessibility, brand standards, and time.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience illustrating in a fast-paced creative environment (agency, product, or editorial).
- Expert proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and familiarity with Figma for integration into digital products.
- Proven ability to build work that operates at different levels of fidelity: from quick visual mock-ups for concepting to polished assets ready for high-res output.
- Ability to shift style based on context while preserving brand voice – from flat design systems to more expressive, textured illustrations.
- Strong understanding of semiotics, spatial hierarchy, and symbolic representation in imagery.
- Experience preparing layered files for animation handoff or working directly with motion designers.
Nice-to-Have
- Animation skills in After Effects or Lottie
- Experience illustrating for interactive storytelling formats or scrollytelling articles
- Familiarity with accessibility design standards (e.g., color contrast, cognitive load)
