Job Description

Key Responsibilities
LEADERSHIP & COACHING

  • Lead, coach, and grow the design team, fostering a culture of customer centricity, craft, ownership, and psychological safety.
  • Develop each designer through critique, feedback, and stretch opportunities — raising the quality of both human and AI-generated design work over time.
  • Set the quality bar and hold it as the team and portfolio scale, and champion design at leadership level.

WORKING WITH AGENCY & PARTNERS

  • Direct and get the best from external UX partners/agency accelerating our design uplift — setting scope, standards, and quality expectations.
  • Own the transition of practices, systems, and standards in-house as the internal capability matures.
  • Manage the blend of internal and external capacity across competing priorities without letting quality slide.

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE & SERVICE DESIGN

  • Own the end-to-end customer experience across complex B2B products — journeys, service touchpoints, and workflows.
  • Run continuous discovery — user interviews, usability testing, competitive analysis — using AI-assisted synthesis to focus time on insight and product decisions.
  • Engage deeply with key enterprise customers, advisory boards, and partners to bring the customer into design decisions.
  • Bake accessibility in from the start — WCAG compliance as part of the process, not an audit at the end.

GLOBAL PATTERNS & PRACTICES

  • Establish global design patterns, guardrails, and frameworks that keep experiences consistent across squads, products, and regions as the platform scales.
  • Build and maintain a shared design system — treated like a product — that keeps multiple squads consistent and drives engineering adoption.
  • Define the design practice’s ways of working — including an AI-native process: which tools, which workflows, which quality gates — and scale it across squads.
  • Maintain a shared insight repository so research compounds across the portfolio rather than disappearing.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Proven design leadership (Head of Design, Design Manager, Principal or Lead level) — you’ve built, coached, and developed design teams, and can show designers who grew under you.
  • Experience and service design strength in complex B2B software — you design journeys and services end to end, from research through to shipped product, ideally in software/SaaS environments.
  • A track record of establishing patterns and practices that scale — design systems, guardrails, and ways of working adopted across multiple teams.
  • Experience directing or working alongside external design partners/agencies, including transitioning capability in-house.
  • AI-native workflow. You use AI tools daily for prototyping and research synthesis, and can articulate how they change design practice.
  • Research fluency. You can plan a research program, run interviews, synthesise findings, and present insights that change minds.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills — you translate design and research into the language your audience speaks, whether that’s a PM, an engineer, or an executive. Direct, not precious.

Desired Expertise

  • Experience in a consultancy or agency environment working across multiple clients.
  • Experience designing AI products and features — explainability, trust patterns, agentic workflows.
  • Comfort in developer-adjacent workflows — design tokens, artifacts in repos, design-to-code tooling.
