Job Description
Overview
We’re seeking a Database Developer who thrives in environments where performance tuning, schema design, and complex data workflows intersect. You’ll join a growing Data Platform team focused on modernizing our core systems with PostgreSQL and SQL Server, enabling real-time analytics, and ensuring data integrity across high-throughput applications.
If you’ve ever restructured a legacy schema and reduced query time by 80%, know why indexing strategies vary between OLTP and OLAP systems, or have views on the right balance between normalization and denormalization—we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Redesign and optimize existing database schemas with a focus on scalability, partitioning, and performance tuning for both transactional and analytical workloads
- Create and maintain complex stored procedures, user-defined functions, and views tailored to our domain-specific data processing
- Collaborate with Data Engineers to design efficient ETL and ELT pipelines using native SQL and orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt)
- Implement database version control and CI/CD integration using tools like Flyway or Liquibase
- Perform hands-on query optimization and index tuning on large datasets (100M+ rows)
- Support the development team with schema evolution, ensuring zero-downtime migrations in production
- Build and manage role-based access controls (RBAC), row-level security, and data masking for sensitive data
- Participate in data modeling sessions with architects and application developers; ability to translate real-world workflows into relational design
Required Skills and Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on SQL development in a production environment
- Deep expertise in PostgreSQL or SQL Server, including query planner analysis and configuration tuning
- Strong experience with relational modeling, including handling high-volume transactional systems
- Proficient in writing T-SQL or PL/pgSQL for procedural logic, error handling, and batch operations
- Prior experience with source control for databases (e.g., Git workflows with Flyway or Liquibase)
- Strong understanding of ACID compliance, indexing strategies, and isolation levels in multi-user environments
- Comfortable working with JSON, array types, and CTEs for recursive or hierarchical data querying
- Exposure to containerized environments (Docker) for local DB development and testing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience migrating from monolithic systems to microservices with decentralized data ownership
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and CDC (Change Data Capture) patterns
- Understanding of data governance, PII handling, and regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA, SOC 2)
- Ability to mentor junior developers and contribute to internal documentation and best practices
