Job Description

Role Overview:

We’re seeking a hands-on Database Administrator who can do more than run backups and monitor performance dashboards. You will manage critical production systems that support high-throughput applications with strict availability requirements. This role goes beyond maintenance — it demands architectural input, performance tuning expertise, and practical experience with complex data environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer and optimize PostgreSQL and MySQL clusters in both on-prem and cloud-based environments (AWS RDS, EC2-hosted DBs).
  • Create, maintain, and test disaster recovery strategies, including replication, point-in-time recovery, and failover configurations using tools like pgBackRest or Percona XtraBackup.
  • Perform in-depth query performance analysis using EXPLAIN (ANALYZE) and actual execution metrics; work directly with developers to revise schema and indexing strategies.
  • Automate routine tasks with Bash, Python, or Ansible — manual interventions should be rare, not regular.
  • Handle database version upgrades across major versions with zero data loss and minimal downtime.
  • Monitor and fine-tune database systems to handle 24/7 transactional workloads with millions of reads/writes per day.
  • Implement role-based access controls, audit logging, and data masking to support compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2, or GDPR as applicable).
  • Design and implement ETL pipelines in coordination with Data Engineering teams; ensure schema changes do not break downstream reporting tools or APIs.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience as a DBA managing production PostgreSQL and/or MySQL systems.
  • Deep understanding of ACID compliance, isolation levels, write-ahead logging, and MVCC behavior.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot locking issues, deadlocks, and corrupted indexes — provide real-world examples if asked.
  • Comfortable interpreting system metrics (iostat, vmstat, sar, etc.) to trace disk I/O bottlenecks back to query patterns.
  • Experience designing and implementing schema changes in zero-downtime environments.
  • Prior use of configuration management tools (Ansible, Terraform) for database infrastructure is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency with cloud-native database features (e.g., Aurora replicas, CloudWatch alerts, IAM-based DB access) is preferred.
