Job Description
We are seeking a proactive Database Administrator (DBA) to manage mission-critical PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server environments within a high-availability financial services infrastructure. This role is far beyond basic maintenance: you’ll be optimizing high-volume transactional databases, enforcing strict security controls, and partnering with engineering teams to refine schema design and query performance at scale. If you’re used to being the last line of defense between data integrity and disaster, this is your kind of environment.
You’ll be part of a cross-functional team, reporting directly to the Director of Infrastructure. Expect to work with developers, DevOps, and compliance teams to support real-time data systems used in financial risk analysis, client reporting, and internal analytics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the availability, performance, and security of all production databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, some MongoDB).
- Tune queries and indexes for applications processing millions of financial transactions daily.
- Design and maintain reliable backup and recovery strategies with sub-minute RTO/RPO targets.
- Develop and enforce data governance policies in accordance with SOC 2 and PCI-DSS compliance.
- Monitor database health using custom alerts, telemetry dashboards (Grafana, Prometheus), and log aggregation (ELK stack).
- Collaborate with software engineers to improve schema efficiency and minimize data access latency.
- Lead efforts to migrate monolithic SQL Server instances to horizontally scalable PostgreSQL clusters.
- Conduct security audits, including permission reviews, access logs, and vulnerability patches.
- Automate routine DBA tasks via Python or shell scripting—manual work is not your habit.
- Maintain detailed documentation for database systems, schemas, and infrastructure.
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years as a DBA supporting mission-critical production environments.
- Strong proficiency in PostgreSQL and SQL Server, including performance tuning, partitioning, and indexing.
- Hands-on experience with replication (logical and physical), failover strategies, and disaster recovery.
- Fluent in writing complex SQL queries, views, stored procedures, and optimizing query plans.
- Experience supporting high-throughput, low-latency data systems in a regulated industry (preferably FinTech or healthcare).
- Working knowledge of cloud-native database deployments (AWS RDS, Aurora, or self-managed EC2 clusters).
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
- Proficient with scripting languages (Bash, Python) for automation and maintenance tasks.
- Experience with security best practices, role-based access controls, and database encryption.
- Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation (approx. 1 week every 6 weeks).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in data modeling for analytical systems (e.g., star schema, columnar storage).
- Exposure to NoSQL technologies (MongoDB, Redis) and when to use them.
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and how database changes fit into automated deployments.
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, PCI, or HIPAA.
