Job Description
About the Role
We are seeking a deeply experienced Database Administrator who is not only proficient in PostgreSQL but has demonstrable experience managing high-throughput, low-latency systems under real-world pressure. This is not a maintenance-only role — you’ll be expected to optimize, architect, and defend our data tier in a rapidly scaling environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, configure, and manage PostgreSQL clusters with streaming replication and automated failover using tools like Patroni, repmgr, or Pgpool-II.
- Design and implement disaster recovery strategies including WAL archiving, point-in-time recovery, and off-site replication.
- Monitor performance using pg_stat_statements, auto_explain, and query analysis tools; proactively tune queries and indexes to reduce execution time by measurable amounts.
- Manage schema versioning and migrations through tools like Sqitch or Flyway in coordination with DevOps.
- Lead zero-downtime deployment strategies for database updates, upgrades, and hotfixes.
- Automate maintenance tasks and backups via scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, or Ansible).
- Collaborate closely with SREs to ensure databases are integrated with Prometheus/Grafana dashboards and alerting systems.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience working as a DBA with PostgreSQL in production environments exceeding 1TB in active data volume.
- Solid understanding of MVCC, VACUUM behavior, partitioning, and query planner internals.
- Experience with cloud-native deployments of PostgreSQL (AWS RDS, Aurora, or self-managed on Kubernetes).
- Comfortable reading
EXPLAIN ANALYZE
outputs and rewriting queries accordingly. - Proven experience setting up monitoring, auditing, and access controls for compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2, or similar).
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with logical replication, Debezium, or Change Data Capture pipelines.
- Experience supporting multi-tenant architectures with schema or row-level isolation.
- Exposure to time-series extensions like TimescaleDB or PostGIS for geospatial data.
- Contributions to open-source PostgreSQL extensions or performance tools are a plus.
