Job Description
Role Overview
We’re looking for a Concept Artist with a deep understanding of environmental storytelling, cultural design logic, and functional worldbuilding. This role is not about just creating visually appealing sketches—it’s about designing environments, props, and characters that make sense in-universe. You’ll be an integral part of the pre-production team, helping to set the visual tone and narrative logic of entirely new worlds.
Responsibilities
- Develop high-concept artwork that informs the design of game worlds, cinematics, or animation pipelines—working from both written briefs and narrative scripts.
- Create environment, prop, architecture, and character concept sheets that communicate materiality, scale, and regional coherence.
- Collaborate with writers, 3D modelers, and level designers to ensure artistic consistency and narrative alignment.
- Iterate designs rapidly based on creative direction and feedback without sacrificing depth or originality.
- Research and apply historical, ecological, and cultural references to establish design credibility and immersion.
- Generate clear, presentation-ready visuals, including mood boards, orthographics, callouts, and tonal studies.
- Translate thematic goals (e.g., isolation, tension, decay, optimism) into specific visual elements across environments and props.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional experience in concept art for games, animation, or film.
- A portfolio showcasing worldbuilding—preferably including regionally cohesive architecture, believable cultures, and prop logic.
- Demonstrated ability to move beyond cliché tropes and create distinct visual identities.
- Proficiency in Photoshop or equivalent painting tools; familiarity with 3D tools like Blender, ZBrush, or SketchUp a plus.
- Strong draughtsmanship: ability to render complex forms with clarity, texture, and lighting.
- Understanding of camera framing, cinematic composition, and spatial storytelling.
- Able to deconstruct visual references and build new ideas from them rather than pastiche.
- Excellent communication skills; able to articulate visual ideas to non-art team members.
