Cloud Engineer

Job Description

These roles are expected to contribute to the design, build, and operation of secure cloud and platform capability supporting enterprise and classified workloads. Opportunities are most likely to be Canberra-based, with potential requirements emerging across other locations nationally.Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate secure cloud and platform services across Microsoft Azure, AWS, and on‑premises Australian Government environments
• Implement infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, CloudFormation) and platform automation pipelines
• Engineer landing zones, guardrails, and policy‑as‑code aligned to the ISM, Essential Eight, and Commonwealth guidance
• Build and operate container platforms (Kubernetes, AKS, EKS, OpenShift) for government workloads
• Embed security controls, logging, and monitoring into platforms by default (secure‑by‑design)
• Support migration of workloads to PROTECTED‑accredited and sovereign cloud offerings
• Collaborate with cyber, identity, network, and application teams to deliver cohesive platform outcomes
• Produce designs, operating procedures, and accreditation evidence to government standards

Required Experience

• Demonstrated experience designing and engineering cloud or platform capability in enterprise environments
• Hands‑on experience with at least one major hyperscaler (Azure preferred) and modern infrastructure‑as‑code
• Experience with CI/CD, Git‑based workflows, and DevSecOps practices
• Working knowledge of Linux and/or Windows server platforms in secure environments
• Experience working within Australian Government or other regulated environments
• Ability to balance pace, quality, and security in delivery
• Prior experience delivering cloud or platform capability within classified Australian Government environments
• Experience with sovereign cloud offerings and PROTECTED‑accredited services
• Familiarity with the ISM, Essential Eight, and Commonwealth cloud guidance
• Experience operating Kubernetes / container platforms at scale, including in classified environments
• Exposure to OT, mission system, or air‑gapped platform engineering
• Networking experience (SD‑WAN, segmentation, micro‑segmentation, secure connectivity to government networks)

• Microsoft Azure certifications (AZ‑104, AZ‑305, AZ‑400, AZ‑500)
• AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, Security Specialty)
• HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate / Vault
• Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)
• Red Hat / OpenShift certifications
• CompTIA Security+ or equivalent
