Backend & Operations Engineer, Python
Job Description
This is a good opportunity for someone who wants real input into how things are done. You’ll work closely with the rest of the team across technology, design and strategy, with the flexibility and support to improve how we build, deploy and support our work.
We do interesting and ambitious digital work for organisations that are doing important things. Our projects bring together good design, thoughtful technology and useful outcomes.
What you’ll do
- Build, maintain, and support website backends using Python, Django, and Wagtail.
- Manage the servers, databases and cloud infrastructure that support our work.
- Deploy applications and keep production systems secure, reliable and performing well.
- Help set the direction of our backend architecture and development practices.
- Solve technical problems with the support of the wider team.
- Work directly with clients when technical input is needed.
As part of looking after our production systems, there may occasionally be some on-call responsibility – this has been very minimal in reality, only a few times a year.

Experience with Wagtail would be ideal, but it isn’t essential if you have good Django or other Python web services experience and are interested in learning it.
You don’t need to know every tool we use. We’re looking for someone with good technical foundations, sound judgement and an interest in helping us improve how we work.
