Your new role

Working as a hands-on Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving the organisation’s predominantly on-prem VMware environment, including its servers, virtual infrastructure, backups and networks.

The environment includes approximately 40 virtual machines, including SQL servers, application servers and domain controllers. It is primarily based on Windows Server 2022, with a smaller number of Windows Server 2016 systems and a limited Azure cloud footprint.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and monitoring backups across the VMware environment
  • Administering approximately 40 virtual machines
  • Supporting Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2016 infrastructure
  • Maintaining SQL servers, application servers and domain controllers
  • Administering VMware and Veeam technologies
  • Supporting Cisco networking infrastructure
  • Monitoring infrastructure performance, capacity and availability
  • Troubleshooting complex server, network and infrastructure issues
  • Supporting the organisation’s hybrid on-prem and Azure environment
  • Using automation to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes
  • Delivering infrastructure upgrades, migrations and improvement projects
  • Working with external managed service providers and technology vendors
  • Escalating risks and critical issues appropriately
  • Assisting the wider technology team and taking ownership of additional work when required

You will work alongside operations engineers responsible for Level 1 and Level 2 support, as well as a senior engineer focused on service delivery and applications.

What you’ll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • At least five years of experience in systems administration or infrastructure engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience supporting VMware environments
  • Experience managing enterprise backups using Veeam
  • Solid knowledge of Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2016, Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Experience supporting Cisco networking technologies
  • Exposure to SQL servers, application servers and domain controllers
  • Experience delivering infrastructure projects from planning through to implementation
  • Knowledge of Azure and hybrid infrastructure environments
  • An understanding of infrastructure automation and scripting
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities
  • The confidence to escalate issues when necessary
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to support the broader team
  • Experience working with managed service providers and external vendors
