Job Description

The Role:

Working across systems engineering, architecture, product, operational and supplier teams, you will ensure functional safety requirements are embedded throughout the complete systems engineering lifecycle. This includes internally developed systems and interfaces, supplier-provided autonomy and vehicle systems, and their integration into operational environments.

This position will suit a systems engineering professional with strong experience in functional safety, safety assurance, requirements traceability and complex software-intensive, autonomous or control systems.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement and maintain the Functional Safety Management Plan, associated procedures, templates and guidance.
  • Define the functional safety lifecycle, required deliverables, review points, acceptance criteria and assurance activities.
  • Provide functional safety input into engineering governance, design reviews, lifecycle reviews, change decisions and release readiness.
  • Establish and maintain hazard identification and risk assessment processes.
  • Facilitate or support HAZID, HARA, FMEA/dFMEA, fault analysis and other risk assessment activities.
  • Maintain governance and configuration control of hazard records, actions, assumptions, constraints and residual risks.
  • Work with Systems Engineering, Architecture, Product and supplier teams to identify safety-related functions across the end-to-end system.
  • Support the derivation and review of safety goals, safety functions, performance targets and functional safety requirements.
  • Maintain traceability from identified hazards through requirements, design allocation, verification, validation and acceptance evidence.
  • Review requirements for completeness, clarity, verifiability and alignment with functional safety objectives.
  • Define expectations for supplier functional safety plans, analyses, verification, validation and supporting assurance evidence.
  • Review supplier safety artefacts and coordinate technical queries, findings and corrective actions.
  • Work with Verification and Validation teams to establish evidence, responsibility and independence requirements.
  • Plan and support Functional Safety Assessments, audits and independent reviews.
  • Contribute to Safety Cases or equivalent structured assurance arguments.
  • Assess the safety impact of engineering and configuration changes, including re-verification and re-validation requirements.
  • Support operational handover by communicating relevant assumptions, limitations, procedures, training requirements and residual risks.
  • Review incidents, operational feedback and system changes for potential impacts on safety requirements and assurance evidence.
  • Support the development and maintenance of functional safety competency requirements for internal teams and suppliers.

Required Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering, functional safety, systems safety, safety assurance or risk engineering.
  • Experience working with complex software-intensive, autonomous, control or safety-related systems.
  • Working knowledge of relevant functional safety and autonomous-system standards, including AS IEC 61508 and ISO 17757.
  • Demonstrated experience in hazard identification, hazard analysis and risk assessment.
  • Experience deriving or reviewing safety requirements and maintaining traceability through design and assurance evidence.
  • A sound understanding of systems engineering lifecycle processes, architecture, interfaces and requirements management.
  • Knowledge of verification, validation, configuration management and change control.
  • Experience reviewing supplier functional safety documentation and technical evidence.
  • The ability to critically assess evidence, identify gaps and provide clear, risk-based recommendations.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work across technical, operational and supplier interfaces.
  • Experience with Safety Cases, Functional Safety Assessments, independent assurance or equivalent structured safety arguments will be highly regarded.
