Backend Engineer

Job Description

What You’ll Do

• Design and implement the multi-tenancy, authentication, and authorisation patterns that support our platform across multiple white-label deployments and hundreds of schools.
• Design, build, and maintain backend services, API routes, and server-side logic powering the Mark My Words platform.
• Develop and optimise database schemas, queries, and data models as the platform scales.
• Build and maintain integrations with Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and other LMS platforms to support self-serve school onboarding.
• Build and maintain backend services and tooling in Rust and TypeScript.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and infrastructure to ensure high availability and rapid deployment.
• Work across the full backend stack — from API design to database performance to third-party webhooks.
• Participate in architecture decisions, code reviews, and technical planning as a core member of a small engineering team.

Skills & Experience
What you’ll bring:

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience.
• Advanced proficiency in both Rust and TypeScript.
• Strong experience with SQL databases — schema design, query optimisation, and data modelling.
• Demonstrated experience designing scalable backend architectures in production.
• Experience implementing multi-tenancy, authentication, and authorisation patterns.
• A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills.
