Lead Backend Engineer – Python -FinTech

Job Description

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and delivery of an enterprise-grade API platform.
• Design and maintain modular, scalable backend services in a cloud-native environment (AWS)
• Optimise backend systems for performance, availability, and cost, while maintaining strong data integrity and compliance practices
• Contribute to technical planning, architectural reviews, and engineering decision-making
• Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and shared ownership of systems
• Help guide the thoughtful adoption of new tools and technologies as the platform grows

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience designing and scaling complex systems
• Strong experience building APIs and backend services using Python – FastAPI or Django.
• Demonstrated experience designing secure APIs, including authentication and authorisation (e.g. OAuth2, JWT, RBAC), rate limiting, and monitoring
• Solid experience with relational and non-relational databases, data modelling, and performance tuning

Preferred Experience

• Experience in fintech or other regulated industries, such as payments, financial platforms, or compliance-heavy SaaS products
• Experience with GraphQL, event-driven systems (e.g. SNS/SQS, Kafka), or asynchronous processing
• Exposure to serverless or containerised architectures
• Experience designing systems with a strong focus on security, auditability, and operational resilience
• Experience maintaining API documentation and supporting developer onboarding
