Job Description
About the Role
We’re looking for a Visual Illustrator who thrives in translating abstract ideas, complex systems, and fragmented inputs into emotionally resonant, visually cohesive illustrations. This role is not about decorating content — it’s about clarifying, amplifying, and sometimes challenging the narrative through precise visual interpretation. You’ll work on everything from longform editorial explainers and product concept boards to real-time sketching during creative strategy sessions.
What You’ll Do
- Concept Translation: Take rough storyboards, audio transcripts, or strategic frameworks and render them into visual pieces that feel intentional, not literal.
- System Design Through Illustration: Develop modular visual assets that align with evolving brand systems — your illustrations should be able to scale from a single frame to a full interactive journey.
- Collaborative Story Crafting: Join early brainstorms with strategists, writers, and motion designers, offering visual ideas that shape the narrative direction from the outset.
- Texture and Tone: Use illustration to subtly influence tone — from editorial gravity to playful experimentation — with an awareness of cultural and emotional nuance.
- Hands-on Production: Deliver polished illustration assets optimized for motion, product, and editorial contexts, while ensuring consistency with brand voice and accessibility standards.
What You Bring
- A Point of View: You illustrate with intent, choosing metaphors and compositions that reveal underlying themes, not just what’s on the surface.
- Cross-Medium Fluency: You’re comfortable creating illustrations for static, interactive, and motion-based contexts — and you understand how your work behaves in each.
- Comfort with Ambiguity: You know how to ask the right questions when the brief is vague or incomplete — and you can create something coherent from raw inputs.
- High Visual Sensitivity: Strong grasp of form, negative space, visual hierarchy, and narrative pacing. Bonus if you’re also familiar with type-as-image approaches.
- Tool Agnosticism: You work in whatever tool gets the job done — from Procreate to Figma to hand-drawn scans stitched together in Photoshop.
- Experience: 3–5 years of experience working in editorial design, product storytelling, or strategic communication environments, ideally in a cross-functional team setting.
Bonus if You…
- Have experience visualizing data or abstract systems in a human, non-technical way
- Have contributed to zines, independent publications, or self-directed narrative work
- Are comfortable illustrating in both low-fidelity sketch mode and high-polish brand style
- Can animate or work closely with motion designers to translate your work into movement
