Job Description
About the Role
We’re looking for a Responsive Web Design Specialist who understands that screen size is not just a technical constraint but a user context. If you obsess over how an interface behaves between breakpoints, have a mental catalog of CSS quirks across devices, and enjoy collaborating with frontend engineers and UX strategists to create flexible, user-focused interfaces—this role is for you.
You won’t be handed static mockups and asked to “just make it work.” You’ll be brought in early to influence layout logic, component strategy, and mobile behavior before anything is built.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement responsive UI systems that adapt seamlessly from 320px to ultrawide screens without relying solely on frameworks.
- Translate complex Figma design systems into scalable, semantic HTML/CSS structures with an emphasis on layout fluidity, not fixed breakpoints.
- Build and maintain a component-based CSS architecture using modern tools (e.g., PostCSS, SCSS, or utility-first systems like Tailwind).
- Conduct real-device testing (not just Chrome DevTools) across Android, iOS, and major tablet breakpoints to validate responsiveness and interactivity.
- Work with engineers to fine-tune grid behaviors, viewport-based units, and container queries for nuanced layout control.
- Collaborate with UX researchers to translate user behavior data into responsive interaction adjustments—e.g., changing tap targets or layout density for thumb reachability.
- Create documentation and handoff guidelines to ensure consistency in responsive behavior across all product surfaces.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in frontend implementation with a focus on responsive behavior, not just aesthetics.
- Proven ability to work without Bootstrap, Foundation, or similar frameworks. You understand how to create grid and layout systems from scratch when needed.
- Strong understanding of CSS Grid, Flexbox, clamp(), min/max/fit-content, and modern units like vw/vh, rem, and ch.
- Experience with container queries, logical properties, and accessibility-first design choices in responsive environments.
- Comfortable working in code—this is not a design-only role. Proficiency in HTML and CSS is required; JavaScript familiarity is a plus for interactive behaviors.
- Ability to clearly communicate design decisions related to responsiveness in both technical and non-technical terms.
- Familiarity with design tokens, theming systems, and working within cross-platform design systems (e.g., building for web + native mobile constraints).
Bonus Points
- Experience optimizing layouts for performance, including lazy-loading strategies and minimizing layout shifts.
- Familiarity with motion design principles for responsive transitions.
- You’ve contributed to or maintained a design system or component library at scale.
