Job Description

About the Role

We’re looking for a Responsive Web Design Specialist who deeply understands how users interact with interfaces across breakpoints—not just someone who makes layouts scale. You’ll work closely with developers and product designers to define fluid, component-based systems that perform across devices without relying on cookie-cutter frameworks. If you can articulate why a layout breaks—not just where—this is your kind of role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define responsive behavior at the component and system level, beyond media queries.
  • Partner with product designers to guide mobile-first decisions and translate static mocks into adaptive, scalable experiences.
  • Build interactive prototypes (Figma, CodePen, or browser-based) to test layout behavior across real device conditions.
  • Audit current front-end implementations for breakpoints, scaling logic, and accessibility gaps related to responsiveness.
  • Establish internal documentation and design tokens that support consistent, reusable responsive patterns.
  • Lead design QA in staging environments, ensuring that spacing, typography, and interactions hold up across screen sizes.
  • Work closely with the performance team to ensure responsive solutions don’t introduce layout shifts or CLS penalties.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience designing or implementing responsive interfaces in production environments.
  • Deep understanding of CSS Grid, Flexbox, container queries, and when to avoid absolute positioning.
  • Strong grasp of browser rendering behavior, including how layout decisions impact repaint/reflow.
  • Familiarity with Figma’s auto-layout and how to use it for responsiveness—not just nesting.
  • Can explain the trade-offs between fixed breakpoints, fluid scaling, and container-based layout decisions.
  • Comfortable working in code (HTML/CSS/JS) even if you aren’t shipping production code yourself.
  • Experience with design systems and how responsive logic fits into atomic or utility-first approaches (e.g., Tailwind, BEM, or custom token-driven systems).
  • Awareness of accessibility concerns in responsive design—especially around touch targets, zoom, and dynamic content reflow.

Nice to Have

  • Experience contributing to or maintaining a cross-platform design system.
  • Understanding of internationalization and how responsive layouts adapt to languages with longer word lengths or RTL directionality.
  • Familiarity with motion design principles and how animations behave differently across screen sizes.
  • Experience working on progressive web apps (PWAs) or SPAs where layout must remain consistent during dynamic view transitions.
