Job Description
We’re looking for a Game Developer with a focus on gameplay systems and AI behaviors to join our growing team on a third-person action-adventure title built in Unreal Engine 5. This role involves creating moment-to-moment gameplay logic, enemy behavior trees, and emergent AI systems that interact meaningfully with player decisions. You’ll collaborate directly with design and animation to ensure that systems feel fluid, readable, and fun.
You should be equally comfortable debugging animation blueprints as you are fine-tuning AI perception parameters. We value experimentation and want someone who enjoys prototyping, iterating quickly, and using data to balance and refine systems. Responsibilities:
- Implement core gameplay systems (combat loops, traversal mechanics, etc.) in Unreal Engine 5 using C++ and Blueprints.
- Design and develop AI behaviors for both enemies and NPCs, using behavior trees and EQS.
- Collaborate closely with animators, designers, and narrative to ensure AI and gameplay systems support intended player experiences.
- Create and tune perception, pathfinding, and decision-making systems to produce reactive and believable behaviors.
- Build robust systems that can scale with evolving game needs and support content created by other departments.
- Identify performance bottlenecks in gameplay and AI systems and optimize for target platforms.
- Participate in regular playtests, identify problem areas, and iterate on systems based on feedback.
Qualifications:
Required:
- 3–5 years of experience as a Game Developer, with at least one shipped title in a systems or AI programming role.
- Strong proficiency in C++ and experience with Unreal Engine (UE4 or UE5), especially gameplay programming and Blueprints.
- Demonstrated experience building AI systems (BTs, perception systems, navigation) that interact with gameplay mechanics.
- Familiarity with animation integration (state machines, montages, sync markers) and how gameplay ties into animation systems.
- Excellent debugging skills, especially in large, live codebases.
- Strong cross-discipline communication; ability to understand and align with design intent.
Preferred:
- Experience with networked AI behaviors or gameplay systems for multiplayer/co-op titles.
- Understanding of utility-based AI, influence maps, or custom decision-making systems.
- Comfort with version control (Perforce) and profiling tools (Unreal Insights, RenderDoc, etc.).
- Background in player feedback systems (e.g., enemy telegraphing, combat readability).
- Familiarity with behavior tree decorators, services, and the nuances of EQS tuning.
