Job Description
We’re seeking a Development Manager who thrives at the intersection of code and collaboration. This role is ideal for someone who still enjoys discussing architecture but knows their true strength lies in removing roadblocks, mentoring engineers, and translating business goals into reliable product delivery. You’ll manage a team of 6–8 full-stack developers focused on building customer-facing features with real-time data, distributed systems, and an evolving microservices architecture.
You won’t be handed a playbook—you’ll help write it. You’ll shape process, prioritize outcomes over ceremonies, and serve as a bridge between engineers, product managers, and stakeholders. A background in engineering is essential, but you’ve also demonstrated that you know how to scale teams, improve technical delivery, and sustain high morale through continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day development activities for one cross-functional squad (frontend, backend, and QA).
- Ensure sprint commitments are realistic and track to completion with high quality and minimal churn.
- Partner closely with Product and UX to shape technical scope during planning—not just execution.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, set growth goals, and provide actionable feedback and mentorship to team members.
- Identify and resolve delivery bottlenecks (e.g., unclear specs, test coverage gaps, infrastructure limitations).
- Oversee code quality and architectural decisions through collaboration and constructive review.
- Help recruit, onboard, and retain high-performing engineers aligned with team values.
- Advocate for technical investment, clearly articulating ROI to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of professional software development experience, with 2+ years in a team leadership or management role.
- Prior hands-on development experience with modern web technologies (e.g., React, Node.js, Go, or Java).
- Proven track record of leading high-functioning Agile teams delivering user-facing products in production.
- Experience managing the full SDLC, including CI/CD pipelines, QA processes, and staging/production rollouts.
- Comfortable challenging product assumptions with data and advocating for iterative delivery.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical issues for non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated success managing career growth, performance plans, and cross-team alignment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in high-availability systems, distributed architecture, or real-time data processing.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, AWS, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Contributions to hiring strategy, team structure, or cross-org process design.
