Job Description

Position Overview:

We are seeking a meticulous and security-conscious Database Administrator to manage, optimize, and secure mission-critical databases supporting high-volume transactional systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and Oracle in a mixed-cloud environment (AWS and on-prem) and a proven track record of implementing automated failover, encryption protocols, and fine-grained access control.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and maintain highly available, fault-tolerant PostgreSQL and Oracle database clusters with replication and backup strategies.
  • Develop and enforce database access policies using role-based access controls (RBAC) and least privilege principles.
  • Configure and monitor performance metrics using tools like pg_stat_statements, Oracle AWR, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to deploy containerized database environments using Kubernetes (K8s) and Helm charts.
  • Implement automated backup and disaster recovery protocols with point-in-time recovery (PITR) and test them quarterly.
  • Participate in incident response by analyzing logs, applying hotfixes, and tuning queries or indexes to restore SLA compliance.
  • Drive compliance with industry regulations including SOC 2, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS, maintaining relevant audit trails and data retention policies.
  • Maintain change control documentation for all DDL and schema migrations using tools such as Liquibase or Flyway.
  • Conduct quarterly data purging and archiving routines for cold data based on business-defined lifecycles.
  • Train junior DBAs and mentor developers on SQL optimization and transaction management patterns.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as a DBA supporting production PostgreSQL and Oracle systems.
  • Deep understanding of MVCC, WAL, vacuuming strategies, and query planning in PostgreSQL.
  • Strong experience with Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and patch lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency in writing and debugging complex SQL, PL/pgSQL, and PL/SQL procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform for RDS/Aurora configuration.
  • Strong understanding of TLS/SSL encryption, Kerberos, and database-level encryption mechanisms (TDE, pgcrypto).
  • Familiarity with pgBouncer or other pooling mechanisms for connection scaling.
  • Comfortable with Linux system administration, shell scripting, and managing file-based storage and IOPS.
  • Experience implementing monitoring alerts with custom thresholds and anomaly detection in a high-availability environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications: Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) or PostgreSQL CE.
  • Prior experience in financial services, health tech, or regulated industries.
  • Exposure to time-series databases (e.g., TimescaleDB) or NoSQL platforms (e.g., Cassandra, Redis) is a plus.
  • Contributions to open-source PostgreSQL tools or participation in DBA communities.
