Job Description

We are seeking a hands-on Database Administrator with deep expertise in PostgreSQL and performance tuning across high-volume transactional systems. This role is ideal for someone who can not only manage and secure database environments but also proactively identify performance bottlenecks, automate routine processes, and contribute to the evolution of our data architecture. You’ll be working closely with backend engineers and SREs to maintain uptime, data integrity, and fast query performance in a fast-paced product environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own PostgreSQL instances in production and staging, including upgrades, tuning, monitoring, and disaster recovery plans.
  • Analyze query performance and recommend or implement indexing strategies, schema redesigns, or query rewrites.
  • Design and implement database backup and retention strategies in line with business continuity objectives.
  • Build automated database health checks, alerting mechanisms, and self-healing scripts where applicable.
  • Collaborate with developers to optimize ORM usage and reduce N+1 query patterns.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot replication (logical and physical) issues in real time.
  • Partner with DevOps for IaC implementation of database infrastructure (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Enforce strict access control and audit mechanisms across environments.
  • Maintain documentation of data flows, schema design decisions, and access controls.
  • Stay current with PostgreSQL features, extensions (e.g., pg_stat_statements, pg_partman), and open-source monitoring tools.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a DBA with a focus on PostgreSQL in production environments.
  • Proven track record of diagnosing and fixing slow queries, locking issues, and I/O bottlenecks.
  • Experience designing and managing high-availability and replication setups (e.g., streaming replication, Patroni).
  • Strong understanding of ACID principles, isolation levels, and PostgreSQL internals (e.g., VACUUM, WAL).
  • Proficiency with scripting in Bash, Python, or Go for automation tasks.
  • Familiarity with containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes) for databases.
  • Experience implementing monitoring solutions (e.g., Prometheus + Grafana, pgBadger, New Relic).

Preferred

  • Experience supporting multi-tenant architectures.
  • Familiarity with columnar extensions (e.g., Citus) or analytical workloads.
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) as they relate to database management.
  • Prior experience working in a regulated industry or with SOC2-compliant systems.
