Job Description

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Concept Artist specializing in environments and visual development to join our team on a narrative-rich action-adventure title in development. This role is not about filling gaps with generic scenery — it’s about translating abstract world-building documents into distinct visual narratives. You will collaborate directly with creative leadership, game designers, and 3D environment artists to define the tone, mood, and architectural logic of a stylized yet grounded game world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Visualize complex environmental spaces from rough design briefs, narrative arcs, or worldbuilding references.
  • Produce environment concepts that reflect gameplay readability, storytelling cues, and mood, using 2D (Photoshop, Procreate) and occasional 3D blockouts (Blender, SketchUp, or similar).
  • Establish regional visual identities (architecture, vegetation, terrain, material language) with logical consistency and cultural grounding.
  • Iterate based on feedback from the Art Director and narrative team, adjusting compositions, focal elements, or tonal balance accordingly.
  • Provide mood paintings, keyframes, and paintovers for level blockouts, maintaining harmony with the lighting and color direction.
  • Document visual guidelines to support outsourcing, modeling, and texture development.
  • Attend daily art standups and contribute proactively during creative reviews.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in a concept art role on at least one shipped title (PC/console preferred).
  • Exceptional skill in designing narrative-driven spaces — you must show a clear ability to convey story and gameplay intent through your environment work.
  • Mastery of perspective, scale, and spatial composition, especially for large open areas, vertical spaces, and transitional zones.
  • Proficiency in rendering both architectural elements and organic forms with believable structural logic and texture variation.
  • Strong foundational understanding of light, atmosphere, and color theory, especially in the context of environmental storytelling.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with design-blocked levels and contribute to layout refinement through visual design.
  • Familiarity with game engine limitations and an understanding of how concept art informs asset production pipelines.
  • Comfortable using 3D tools for basic layout or paintover prep (e.g., Blender, Maya LT, or Gravity Sketch).
