Job Description
About the Role
We’re seeking an Animator with a distinctive sense of timing, rhythm, and emotion—someone who understands movement not just as motion, but as storytelling. This role isn’t about following templates. You’ll be animating stylized characters and abstract sequences in both 2D and 3D pipelines, contributing directly to narrative sequences, interactive media, and experimental content. If you’re interested in shaping a visual language that leans into the unusual, this is your place.
Key Responsibilities
- Animate expressive character performances with clear psychological intent—whether for humanoid rigs, non-humanoid creatures, or object-based characters.
- Translate storyboards and rough layouts into polished animated sequences that prioritize gesture, weight, and spatial logic.
- Collaborate with riggers and modelers to provide feedback on deformation, control responsiveness, and silhouette clarity.
- Create dynamic transitions and interstitial sequences that emphasize continuity of motion over cuts.
- Adapt animation style to project tone—this could mean snappy, broken stylization one month, and lingering surrealism the next.
- Integrate animated sequences into a broader compositing pipeline (After Effects, Nuke, or equivalent), paying attention to timing against final edit/audio.
- Participate in animation reviews with creative directors and writers—expect deep discussions about gesture intent, not just technical polish.
- Occasionally prototype animation systems or looping behaviors for interactive/real-time media (Unity or Unreal Engine a plus).
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in animation for film, games, series, or experiential media.
- A reel that shows precision in storytelling through movement—we want to see choices, not just keyframes.
- Proficiency in either Maya, Blender, or equivalent 3D tool, and strong 2D experience in Toon Boom, TVPaint, or Adobe Animate.
- A strong grasp of non-standard timing—you should know when to linger and when to interrupt.
- Understanding of anatomy and stylization, including the ability to break and exaggerate form deliberately.
- Comfortable working without mocap; we prefer animators who key by feel and intention.
- Experience working with unconventional rigs or experimental formats (e.g., projection-mapped sequences, VR puppetry, or physical installation animation) is a big plus.
Bonus Skills
- Ability to sketch or thumbnail key poses to communicate intention early.
- Experience with procedural animation, simulation, or generative systems.
- Sound design sensibility and ability to time animation to experimental audio.
- Comfort with working in iterative environments where versioning is part of the process.
